Jamaica’s Usain Bolt became the first man in 24 years to run to double sprint gold at the Olympics
21. August 2008 by admin.
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt became the first man in 24 years to run to double sprint gold at the Olympics, breaking the world record in the 200 metres on Day 12 at the Beijing Games.
Bolt ran 19.30 seconds into a slight headwind to blow away the field in Wednesday’s final, breaking Michael Johnson’s 12-year-old record.
As promised, Bolt ran full steam through the finish line.
“After I finished running the 100 metre, I was saying, ‘This is possible,’” Bolt told CBC Sports. “If I’m going to break it [anywhere], it’s going to be here because the track is quick.
“I just came out here and just gave it my all, so I’m happy,” he added.
Bolt collapsed on his back after seeing his record time. Later, he danced on the track for the thrilled crowd at Bird’s Nest Stadium.
Defending Olympic champion Shawn Crawford took silver in 19.96 seconds, with Walter Dix earning his second bronze of the Games in 19.98 seconds. Dix, just out of Florida State University, finished third in the 100 final last week.
Crawford and Dix ascended to the podium after a pair of disqualifications.
Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles ran in 19.82 and celebrated an apparent silver-medal win. American Wallace Spearmon thought he had taken third ahead of his countrymen, as well as Zimbabwe’s Brian Dzingai.
Spearmon, the bronze medallist at last year’s worlds, was told while on the track that he was disqualified for stepping outside his Lane 9 line.
Martina didn’t learn until much later that he, too, was disqualifed for the same offence after U.S. track officials filed a protest.
Bolt, on his 22nd birthday, became the first man since U.S. runner Carl Lewis at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to win gold in both the 100 and 200. Bolt can go for another gold as part of Jamaica’s 4×100 relay.
Earlier in Beijing, Bolt ran a world-record 9.69 to earn gold in the 100, even though he let up in the last several metres to celebrate, a move criticized by some track observers.
“Come on … when you’re running, if you see you’re going to win, you’re going to celebrate,” Bolt told CBC Sports. “You’re going to be Olympic champion, you’re just happy. That’s pretty much it.

EMPIRE ISIS WINS “BEST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST

EMPIRE ISIS WINS “BEST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST” - UNDERGROUND URBAN MUSIC AWARDS IN NYC
www.myspace.com/empireisis
The empire grows for the most talked about Urban talent out of Canada. Empire ISIS won
“Best International Artist of the Year” at the Underground Urban Music Awards in NYC August 10th. This is Empire ISIS‘ 6th award win of the year, following her recent win at the Toronto Independent Music Awards and recent nomination for “Best World Album” at GAMIQ awards (Quebec Indie Music Awards.
The Underground Music Awards is a national award show that breaks all of the rules of conventionalism. Unlike the Grammy Awards or the Billboard Music Awards, the Underground Music Awards were created to acknowledge and honor the achievements and contributions of unsigned and independent artists within the urban music scene. Every year there are incredible records released by independent labels and artists. Very rarely do the institutional accolades of the music industry reach or embrace independent music or the community of artists and fans who now represent 25% of all global music sales. Hence, the Underground Music Awards Program was born to fill that void.
“It’s like the Grammy’s of the Underground! With the Underground Music Awards, Urban Threshold has created a great platform for talented independent artists to get on the radar and receive accolades and major recognition “. - Riggs Morales, Director of A&R of Shady Records
Past winners and Honorees of Urban Threshold’s Underground Music Awards include: Lupe Fiasco, MIMS, Stiles P, Kid Capri, MOP, Papoose, Remy Martin, Killah Priest, Afu-Rah, Kool G. Rap, Lil Mamma, DJ Red Alert, Ralph McDaniels, Cormega, DJ Kay Slay, Saigon, Lumidee, and many more..

BERES HAMMOND with the HARMONY HOUSE SINGERS & BAND LIVE IN CONCERT AT CLUB SODA - MONTREAL
8. August 2008 by admin.
BERES HAMMOND with the HARMONY HOUSE SINGERS & BAND
LIVE IN CONCERT AT CLUB SODA - MONTREAL
with special guests Mikey Dangerous & King Shadrock
MONTREAL, QC (August 1, 2008) – Jamaican musical legend Beres Hammond will return to the United States and Canada from July 30th to September 7th for his highly anticipated tour, celebrating his upcoming VP Records album A MOMENT IN TIME. Beres, along with the Harmony House Singers & Band will grace the city of Montreal on Thursday, August 28th at Club Soda. Opening the Montreal show will be 2008 Juno Award Winner Mikey Dangerous, and local favourite King Shadrock. Pre and post show music will be provided by Montreal heavyweights Little Thunder, Nighthawk International, DJ Soul, and Toronto’s own Mista Jiggz, and DJ Chocolate.
On the tour, fans can look forward to hear Beres’ timeless classics as well as brand new material from his eagerly awaited album, set for release on October 14, 2008.
BERES HAMMOND
Known to many as the originator of “Lover’s Rock” or the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over 3 decades. From his early days as the lead singer of the ’70s funk-reggae infused band Zap Pow, Beres has consistently produced hits and number one singles.
While newcomers today are searching for a breakthrough hit and old timers are plotting their comeback, Beres is a study in longevity. He released his first studio album, SOUL REGGAE in 1976 spawning the number one hit “One Step Ahead” and in 1985 the dancehall breakthrough “What One Dance Can Do” off his self entitled album.
Hammond has collaborated with Reggae’s elite—and has worked with legendary producers like Willie Lindo, Steely and Clevie, and Philip “Fattis” Burrell.
In 1990, his album A LOVE AFFAIR from Donovan Germain’s Penthouse label raised his popularity to new heights. Cuts like “Tempted To Touch” and “Who Say” with Buju Banton are still huge in the dancehall today. During the ’90s, Beres blazed a trail of modern classics for a variety of producers; from the strugglers’ anthem “Putting Up Resistance” (Tappa) to lovers’ laments like “Come Back Home” (Star Trail).
In 2001, Beres brought us major hits like “They Gonna Talk” and “Rock Away” from his Grammy-nominated album MUSIC IS LIFE. VP Records then released THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION: CAN’T STOP A MAN in 2003 to commemorate Hammond’s career, and in 2004 his most recent album LOVE HAS NO BOUNDARIES, which features his familiar romantic ballads and mid-tempo dancehall grooves.
MIKEY DANGEROUS
Mikey Dangerous’ many years of hard work and talent have been enjoyed by many fans, and equally recognized by critics and the media; he has been nominated at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards, the Reggae Music Achievement Awards, and was the winner of the 2008 Juno Award for Reggae Recording of the Year for his hit single, “Don’t Go Pretending.” His voice is rich and strong, his lyrics are hard-hitting and while on stage, he skillfully manoeuvres through a diverse musical canon ranging from lovers rock to conscious roots to dancehall. He has performed in the Caribbean and across North America, recently appearing and headlining at the Montreal International Reggae Festival. He is also one of the headline acts at the 5th Annual Calgary Reggae Festival being held this August. His energy and fire are undeniable and have always been contagious to his many appreciative audiences.
KING SHADROCK
There are very few Canadian reggae artists who achieve success and acclaim in more than one city, and Jamaican-born Shadrock has done that very well, shuttling back and forth between Toronto and Montreal performing his hit songs like “Shotta,” “Shadrock,” and “Moving Forward.” His 2005 album MOVING FORWARD charted in Seychelles, South Africa, Toronto and Montreal, and garnered him the Toronto International Reggae Music Award for best single for “Shotta.” Not content to rest on his laurels, this talented artist (who’s still known affectionately by some as “Little Buju” because of his appealing baritone) continues to record and release singles. Shadrock has been busy touring everywhere from South Africa to Jamaica, and has appeared on countless concerts in Canada as well, from the Calgary Reggae festival to Toronto’s Jamaica Day and Irie Festivals to Quebec’s Mystic Mountain Reggae Bash.
The August 28th Montreal show is sponsored in part by Montreal Community Contact, CKUT 90.3FM, K103.7FM, CISM 89.3FM, Montrealdancehall.com, Triple AAA Entertainment, and VP Records.

Come Back Home” (Star Trail).
En 2001, Beres nous a apportés des hits majeurs tels que “They Gonna Talk” et “Rock Away” de son album nominé aux Grammys, MUSIC IS LIFE. L’étiquette VP Records a ensuite diffusé THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION: CAN’T STOP A MAN en 2003 pour commémorer la carrière de Hammond. De plus, son plus récent album paru en 2004, LOVE HAS NO BOUNDARIES, présente ses ballades romantiques familières et des grooves dancehall mid-tempo.
MIKEY DANGEROUS
