Junior Vibes’ Corner: The State of Dancehall Music

Junior Vibes Yes massive, it’s your boy Junior Vibes representing Nighthawk International and More Fyah Radio here on the MrHookUpz.com linkup giving you my entire take on the dancehall industry.  Now this is my first of a set of reoccurring blogs which you all will be able to check out monthly right here on MrHookUpz.com.

Now let’s not waste any time and get right down into it….The first I wanna talk about here is the current state of the dancehall music. Now believe me, I’m feeling a lot of the songs that out running the streets right now. Production is hot and the tunes are very catchy.  However, I think it’s fair to say that this is probably the lowest point in dancehall history.

I say this because a lot of the songs out right now are hip hop oriented. They either have a predominantly hip hop sound or mention some kind of yankee slang that you would normally not hear anywhere in Jamaica. Don’t get me wrong, I started off dj’ing hip hop music…but reggae music is the root of it all and I keep it real and feel that when dealing with REGGAE music, beats sounding like the work of Kanye West or Timbaland should have no place.

Everything happening right now is dealing with the hype, from the riddims to the lyrical content. The roots & culture has all but disappeared and has left a huge void in the consciousness of the music today. WHAT DO U THINK???

I understand where ur coming from Junor Vibes. You hear a lot of hip hop and rnb samples now days. I think they’re just looking for a quick hit, as opposed to making good music for the people. But I guess thats just the progressiong of the music?

Vibes you couldn’t be more right on this one. Firts of all you got one dude that wants to be 2-pac and another that wants to be T-pain(I aint naming no names). These days moneys talks and it’s easier to mimic someone elses style than come out with your own original stuff.

If the youth dem want to make money let them make money. You may call it sellin out, I call it being a good business man. After you get where you want to be then you can make whatever music you want.

That’s why I don’t listen too all the hypeness. It’s all about who can make the next big dance move. Groups like Morgan Heritage don’t get the credit they deserve. Everyone want to be on MTV and BET with all dis watered down garbage. Like the youth said above everything is money, money, money!!

This short of thing has been going on in reggae music for a while now. The fact is when Americans start to vibe to the music, the artist get rich. The easiest way to do that is to make American friendly music or as i call it “bullshit”!

Every type of music goes though some sort of evolution. It seems as if right now reggae music, dancehall in particular, is going throught a transition. A lot more rnb type songs coming out, that isn’t such a bad thing. Has any one thought of the positives? Like new lovers of the music being brought in. Can we stop arguing what’s good for reggae. Isn’t it suppose to be music that brings people together?

  7. Don says:

I think it’s good for the business, it’s gets more people involved witht the music. If the man dem want to use hip hop beats let dem do it. Music is music, the last thing we should do is try to define reggae music. Cause when you start to define it, you limit it and reggae music is limitless. Jah=Love
